Matilda "Mattie" Cook of the novel Fever, 1793 who was a teenage protagonist shows growth over the course of the story because of the life she had to live. She had to survive the yellow fever outbreak and she had to endure the pain of seeing her grandfather was killed by thieves. She became responsible and helped her mother and had adopted a kid who had no family.
