Why is Judaism a foundation and important part of Christianity?

Judaism was there before Christianity and allowed for some of the ideas to be "copied" over into the new religion. The Old Testament is the Torah from Judaism, well part of it. The Torah is often restricted to signify the first five books from the Old Testament. Judaism was a base, or foundation, to help start the new religion.
