Why did Organized crime become powerful during the prohibition?

With the large amount of money coming from selling illegal liquor, gangs then diversified into other lucrative illegal businesses like money laundering, prostitution, gambling... etc. with an incredible amount of money, gangs bribed authorities(police chief, mayor, etc...) and do whatever shady things to keep their profitable illegal activities going.
