A complex number is a number defined a [tex]a+bi[/tex] where [tex]a \ and \ b[/tex] are both real numbers and [tex]i[/tex] comes from the solution of the equation [tex]x^2=-1[/tex]. So the absolute value of a complex number is the distance between the origin [tex](0,0)[/tex] and the point [tex](a,b)[/tex] in the complex plane. So this can be expressed by the following formula:

[tex]d=\sqrt{a^2+b^2}[/tex]

For instance, for the complex number [tex]3+4i[/tex], the absolute value is:

[tex]\sqrt{3^2+4^2}=5[/tex]
