What was the purpose of bombing cities in World War 2?

Bombing proved to be a useful form of attack because enemy planes could drop tons of bomb in a matter of seconds which would totally decimate the landscape. Bombing raids were performed to  not only weaken the country's government, but to destroy command centers and supply lines.
