Answer: The decline of the Byzantine empire was a slow process. The Seljuk Turks began to invade the empire forcing the Byzantine emperor to ask the Pope for help. This lead to the Crusades. Venetian merchants also wanted to control trade so they convinced Crusaders to loot Constantinople. They never recovered from this looting but would not be conquered until the Ottoman Turks took over Constantinople.
