Explain the relationship between the number of valence electrons and the reactivity of a metal.

The valence electrons on atoms determine an element's reactivity. The more easily an element can attain a noble-gas electron configuration by losing or gaining a small number of electrons in its valence shell, the more reactive the element tends to be.
