How phylogeny provides reliable information about evolution of life on Earth?

Phylogeny has to do with the history of the evolution of a species or a group, usually represented in the form of a phylogenetic tree. Since it studies evolution, it is only natural it could give us some kind of reliable information about the existence of life on Earth and how it all came to be.
