It is known as the "greatest real estate deal in history", as it was purchased for just about $15 million at the time, stretching from Canada to New Orleans, and from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. It opened up 828,000 square miles for anyone to be able to travel to, or to put this into perspective, it doubled the size of the United States at the time.
