They are often used interchangably but arteriosclerosis is when the arteries become thick and stiff, which results in restricted blood flow to organs and tissues, while atherosclerosis is a specific type of arteriosclerosis, the buildup of fats, cholesteral, etc (plaque) on the arterial walls which causes the lumen to narrow and essentially blocks blood flow.
