In this excerpt from “an episode of war” by stephen crane, why does the doctor promise not to amputate the lieutenant’s arm?

In the story “An Episode of War,” the doctor promise not to amputate the lieutenant’s arm because the latter is acting unusual. He acts like a baby. The doctor said this as not to make the lieutenant more anxious and worried.
