Helicase is an enzyme which is used to break hydrogen bond and open the DNA helix during DNA replication.

It is the hydrogen bond which holds the double-stranded DNA together and these are broken by DNA helicases. The single-stranded DNA needed as a template or reaction intermediate in DNA replication, repair, and recombination is created as a result of this energy-intensive unwinding reaction by helicase.
