Why were many Americans opposed to U.S. involvement in World War I in 1914?

 There was a general feeling that this was a European conflict in which the US had no place involving itself. Plus, the US being made up of so many immigrants from countries that were both the Allied and Central Powers it was difficult to actually take a side.  Hope this helps
