The event in itself has many reasons to be celebrated by the Jews. The main one is that 49 days after the exodus of the Jews from Egypt, God gave them the Ten commandments at mount Sinai. So this celebrations is carried on the 50th day after passover. It is a good time to give thanks to God for the new grain of the summer wheat harvest in the land of Israel
