Why do we have pairs of chromosomes, not just single copies?

Its not the chromosomes themselves but the genes arranged on them which are important. Genes are sections of DNA responsible for things like hair color and disease resistance. Genes occur in pairs on the chromosomes and the two copies are not always the same. We have pairs of chromosomes because one of the pair can be defective. Therefore functioning gene will still ensure the trait is passed on to the next cell.
