my answer -

You should not look directly at the partial phases of a solar eclipse, because even a sliver of full sun is intense enough to burn your eye. The totally eclipsed sun is perfectly safe to look at. All phases of a lunar eclipse are safe, because the moon itself is safe to look at, and an eclipse only makes it dimmer.
