What you are supposed to do is first put your shift into neutral, and then pull the handbrake and turn off the vehicle. After that you should put it into park to lock it in place. Also, be sure to turn the wheels towards the curb so as to have it as a natural buffer in case something goes bad or your braking system breaks.
