x = 3y + 2 = 3(5) + 2 = 15 + 2 = 17

Let the number be x.

Hence the other number is 2 + 3*x.

Their sum is 22;

x + 2 + 3x = 22

4x + 2 = 22

4x = 20

 Therefore, x = 5

[ 2 + 3x = 2 + 3*5 = 2+15 = 17 ]
