absolute value is always positive, so  |-3| equals positive 3

| -3 | and -3

the absolute value of a number is just how many spaces that number is from 0. So it is not negative because distance is not measured in negative values.. The absolute value of a number is positive. So |-3| = 3.

-3 just equals -3.

so the difference, I guess, is that -3 is negative but the absolute value of -3 is positive
