why is direct democracy impractical in the united states today

Direct democracy can happen for example through referendums ( as in Switzerland). This is costly, as it it requires letters to ALL the citizens (or all citizens need to be present somewhere).

US is a country with a very big population: a direct democracy would result in enormous costs.
