how might a trader improve his social status

A trader might improve his social status either by becoming a better trader. When he does this and starts selling more goods he can either open a new shop, hire other traders or start selling more expensive things. 

Another thing would be that he would start giving more earnings to philantrophy as this would make him be more favorable in the eyes of the public.
