I think that now it's more likely that the two parts of Cyprus will remain independent: they might enter a loose union though, and both enter the EU (that is, the northern part of the Island might become independent and enter the EU): then the island could be de-facto united (no physical borders and freedom of movement) but noone would have to admit to loosing (and neither side would want to).
