Why is it important to distinguish between a language difference and a developmental delay or disability

When children learn two or more languages, delays in social development and communication may occur. It is important to know this difference because delays can be warning signs for future development problems in the socio-emotional and cognitive areas. Early childhood educators are the ones who must determine the cause: language difference or disability.
