The median is not affected by large or small outliers.
The mean on the other hand is affected by outliers. The more distant the outlier, the more skewed the mean will be.
For example, home prices will have a larger than normal mean because of very rich mansions which are far above the average group. This is why the median home price is a more useful measure of center.
